Sacred Heart Church in partnership with Catholic Charities and Martha’s Village &Kitchen will be providing food monthly to Duroville, a trailer community of approximately 2,000 people in the East Valley on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian Reservation.
Volunteers for packaging and delivery will be needed every month as part of our ongoing 2 year project.
Update:
A message from our Duroville Food Distribution Coordinator:
For those of you who have seen the movie "Field of Dreams" that's what February’s packing and delivery represented to me.
First, "if you build it, He will come". The vision of our benefactors, who provide us the resources to purchase the food, has enabled us to start a program of serving those in need. When we built the program we needed volunteers to make it happen. To date over 250 volunteers have responded to our need of "if you build it, They will come".
Second, "ease His pain". All of the people that are part of the program are insuring each month that we assist the Lord by helping the less fortunate and in some small way by "easing their pain of hunger.
Third, "go the distance". On Wednesday just prior to Deacon Fernando distributing Lenten ashes; I looked out onto the road the leads into the park and saw what seemed like dozens of cars turning into the community. And just like in the movie, I saw 60 to 70 people getting out of their cars walking towards Deacon Fernando accepting the Lord's request by committing to "go the distance" through the distribution of the 560 boxes of food to 265 homes and nearly 3300 residents that afternoon. And as the sunset, they all got in their cars and went home knowing they had "gone the distance" as the Lord had asked of them.
Wednesday's gathering was truly a spiritual event for me and I hope for you. The Lord was truly amongst us as we were doing His work.
Packing: Volunteers will assemble and pack boxes with non-perishable food items for delivery.
Next packing date is April 19, from 8:30AM to 10:00AM at Martha’s Village in Indio.
Delivery: Volunteers needed for door to door delivery of boxes weighing approximately 30+ pounds.
Delivery is set for April 21, from 5:00 PM to 6:15 PM at Duroville.
We ask for support and prayers from our entire community as this project can not be possible without the strength and labor of our volunteers and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
If you would like to volunteer please contact the Parish Office at 346-6502
